Meskwaki Bingo Casino Hotel Recap
Jesse Green was supposed to be in Cancun, Mexico. Instead, he decided to spend his vacation near his home town playing in the Heartland Poker Tournament at Meskwaki Bingo Casino Hotel in Tama, Iowa.
“This was really awesome,” said Green, 23, a local farmer from Harcourt, Iowa. “And it was especially great that my dad could be here to watch the whole thing.”
Green went on to describe how, while growing up on the farm and trapped indoors due to the weather, his father and brother would play seven card stud.
“I owe it all to my dad, he taught me the game,” said Green.
Green outlasted a main event field of 189 players, earning the championship and a first place prize of $80,664, plus a champions package of $3,000.
It didn’t come easy. With his Dad watching from the front row, Green entered the final table as the chip leader but quickly found himself playing the role of underdog. The trip to victory was nothing short of a roller coaster for Green who at one point found himself with a mere handful of chips, completely dominated by the remaining players. After some fortunate flops and some raw aggression, Green clawed his way back into contention, finally taking down the championship when his pocket deuces held up on the final hand, in the wee hours of the Iowa morning.
Next on the HPT schedule is a return trip to Golden Gates Casino in Black Hawk, Colorado, home of one of the best tournaments on the HPT schedule. Qualifiers for that event begin March 29th.
