Meskwaki Bingo Casino Hotel Recap

An economics student from Drake University drove an hour north of campus to play in his first ever big time poker tournament and was rewarded with an $82,000 first place, capturing the title at the Heartland Poker Tour event at Meskwaki Casino in Tama, Iowa. Marketing student Jason Joerling had just turned 21 a few days earlier and was a virtual rookie at live poker, having earned most of his poker experience in on-line play.

“I started the final table as the slight chip leader and I was thinking of nothing less than first place” said Joerling. “This is really a great way to start my live tournament career.”

Joerling bested a final table that included several veteran players including Mary Jo Belcore-Zogman, a recent HPT champion, as well as two poker playing buddies from the Minneapolis area who made the drive together and ironically found themselves seated at the final table. Blake Bohn and Quan Le, both experienced tournament players, made the four hour drive together and had the good fortune of making the TV final table.

But it was youth that triumphed over experience as Joerling stayed on the aggressive and ran very well during final table action, winning a critical race three handed when his AK prevailed over pocket nines. Eventually, it was an A2 of hearts that proved to be the winning hand heads up when Bohn’s KJs failed to improve after calling a pre-flop all in.

“I’m still planning on getting to my econ class tomorrow morning” grinned Joerling. “As for the money, I’m going to be able to pay off my school and invest the rest.”

After her sixth place finish in Meskwaki, recent HPT champ Mary Jo Belcore-Zogman moved into the lead for the hotly contested race for HPT Player of the Year award. With only two events left in the 2008 season, Mary Jo is close to wrapping up a first ever female POY on the HPT.

For the Heartland Poker Tour, season four is reaching its conclusion with two last events in the next two weeks. This weekend they make their first ever stop at Running Aces Card Club, just 15 miles north of St. Paul MN. The HPT season concludes the following week with the Championship Open at Majestic Star Casino in Gary IN. The 5th season of the HPT is almost set and will be released very soon.
