Running Aces Harness Park Recap
A cabinet maker, and part time poker player, took advantage of a chance casino visit to parlay a satellite win into an HPT championship and $97,000 over the weekend at Running Aces Harness Park, located a few miles north of the Twin Cities.
“This place is only a few miles from home so I decided to stop in last Friday and play a qualifier” said Corey Fromm, 36, a local business owner. “I was able to win my entry into the main event and here I am.”
Fromm entered the final table as chip leader and was able to navigate a very difficult final table that included a Judd Greenagel, former HPT champion, as well as Chad Ogle, a former Canterbury Park Main event Champion.
“I think this was the toughest field I’ve ever seen in Minnesota,” said eventual sixth place finisher Ogle. “We had a bunch of HPT champions here and some WSOP bracelet holders. It was a very tough.”
In all, 226 players played in the $1650 two day main event, ending two weeks of poker action at the sparkling new card club. Running Aces opened July 3rd of this year and is a harness racing park for part of the year and an impressive card club all year long, featuring over 20 poker tables as well as other table games and off track betting. This was the inaugural 10,000 Lakes Poker Championship, 14 days full of tournaments and qualifiers.
For the Heartland Poker Tour, the final event of the 2008 season is already under way at Majestic Star Casino in Gary, IN. Qualifiers are running now into the HPT Championship Open with the main event starting Friday November 21st. It promises to be one of the largest events of the season.
