Missouri - Ameristar Casino Resort Spa St Charles Recap

Doctor Captures HPT Title and $150k

Kane Lai tops field of 466 at Ameristar St. Charles

St. Charles, MO (November 9, 2015) – Kane Lai got surgical on the competition at Ameristar Casino Resort Spa St. Charles on Monday. The doctor from Highlands Ranch, Colorado ran well and played even better on the way to his first victory with Heartland Poker Tour, worth $150,593.

“I’ll be playing more HPT stops in the future,” said the new champ with a smile after the win.

Lai’s final opponent at the nationally-televised Final Table was logger Chris Cornell. The two came into heads-up play virtually dead even in chips. On the last hand of the night, they got all of the chips in the middle with Lai holding a higher flush. Cornell, a Clarksville, Tennessee native, exited with $92,055 for second place.

Collinsville, Illinois’ William Haner started the day near the bottom of the leaderboard. The local business owner won his seat into the event after investing just $200 in a qualifier tournament. In the end, Haner was able to turn that sum into $61,021 for a third-place finish. He plans to apply the cash towards the purchase of a new home.

When play began Monday, Ryan Tepen was the runaway chip leader. He had amassed a stack of nearly 5 million chips, with no other player over the 3 million mark. The Bowling Green, Missouri resident was able to build on his lead early on, but eventually found his tournament life at risk with king-queen against Lai’s ace-jack. The ace-jack held up and Tepen was sent to the rail in fourth place with $42,427.

Just before Tepen’s departure, local sales manager Greg Wood was also eliminated by Lai. The St. Charles man took home $31,754 for his weekend’s worth of work.

Much like William Haner, Scott Vetter won his seat into the HPT Main Event at Ameristar St. Charles on a $375 investment. Vetter, of Washington, Illinois, climbed the pay ladder long enough to parlay that amount into a $24,552 score for sixth place.

Business Development Executive Ryan White is no stranger to the bright lights of an HPT Final Table. This was his third appearance in front of the cameras. White has never finished higher than third place and he’ll have to make at least one more Final Table if he hopes to win a title. The Leawood, Kansas man was the seventh-place finisher Monday, collecting $19,969 in the process.

Las Vegas’s Mark Fleddermann earned $16,368 when he went out in eighth place at the hands of the eventual champ. Shortly before that, Richard Gum became the first player to hit the rail. Gum, a retired TWA crew chief from Granite City, Illinois, earned $13,095 for ninth place.

HPT’s final televised event of the calendar year begins next Thursday in Central Michigan. Several early 2016 tour stops have already been announced with more coming soon. Visit HPTpoker.com for more information.
